DNA test for the MICOS13/QIL1 c.325G>A risk variant associated with ventricular arrhythmia and sudden death in the Rhodesian Ridgeback.
Overview
This genetic test detects the MICOS13 variant c.325G>A in the Rhodesian Ridgeback. The gene has also been known as QIL1. The variant is associated with ventricular arrhythmia, juvenile ventricular arrhythmia, Rhodesian Ridgeback inherited ventricular arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death.
Ventricular arrhythmia means abnormal electrical rhythms arise from the heart ventricles. In susceptible dogs this may lead to abnormal beats, weakness, exercise intolerance, fainting or sudden death. The condition matters because young dogs can appear healthy while still having an abnormal heart rhythm.
MICOS13/QIL1 is involved in mitochondrial structure and energy production. The heart has high energy demands, so disruption of this pathway can be relevant for cardiac rhythm and muscle-cell function.
The inheritance is not fully settled. This test is therefore best read as a genetic risk test. A dog with two G alleles does not carry the tested variant. A dog with one A allele carries the risk variant and can pass it on. A dog with two A alleles has the genotype most strongly linked to increased risk in this test.
This test gives breeders and owners concrete genetic information about a serious heart-risk marker in the Rhodesian Ridgeback. The result helps identify carriers and dogs with two copies, plan matings more carefully and screen relatives within affected lines.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Risk variant not detected (GG)
The tested MICOS13/QIL1 c.325G>A risk variant was not detected. This dog will not pass on the tested A variant and has no increased genetic risk from this specific variant based on this test.
Genotype / allele combination: One copy of risk variant (GA)
One copy of the MICOS13/QIL1 c.325G>A risk variant was detected. This dog can pass the A variant to about half of its offspring. For breeding, this is especially important to avoid combinations that could produce puppies with two copies.
Genotype / allele combination: Two copies of risk variant (AA)
Two copies of MICOS13/QIL1 c.325G>A were detected. This genotype gives the highest genetic risk within this test and is strongly associated with juvenile ventricular arrhythmia and sudden death in the Rhodesian Ridgeback. This dog will pass the A variant to all offspring.
