DNA test for HES7 c.126delG, the recessive lethal variant causing spondylocostal dysostosis, SCD and comma defect in Schnauzers.
Overview
This genetic test analyses the HES7 variant c.126delG in Schnauzers and Miniature Schnauzers. The condition is known as spondylocostal dysostosis, SCD, comma defect and autosomal recessive lethal rib and vertebral malformation.
Spondylocostal dysostosis is a severe developmental disorder of the vertebrae and ribs. Affected puppies have a markedly shortened body, abnormal ribs and vertebrae and a comma-like body shape caused by a relatively small hindquarter. The disorder is lethal: affected puppies are stillborn or die shortly after birth.
The trait is autosomal recessive and lethal when a puppy inherits two copies of the tested variant. Clear dogs do not carry the variant, carriers have one copy and are usually healthy, but can pass the variant to offspring.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Clear for the tested HES7 variant (N/N)
The dog does not carry the tested variant and will not pass this variant to offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Carrier of the tested HES7 variant (N/delG)
The dog carries one copy of the HES7 variant. It is usually healthy, but can pass the variant on; mating with another carrier can produce lethally affected puppies.
Genotype / allele combination: Lethally affected genotype for comma defect (delG/delG)
The puppy has two copies of the HES7 variant. This genotype causes lethal spondylocostal dysostosis: affected puppies are stillborn or die shortly after birth.
