What does this test analyse?

This genetic test analyses the c.58A>T variant for progressive retinal atrophy / BBS4-PRA in the Hongaarse Puli. PRA is an umbrella term for inherited retinal disorders in which photoreceptors progressively deteriorate.

What does this condition mean?

In the Puli, this BBS4 form causes progressive retinal degeneration with night blindness and loss of peripheral vision. BBS4 can also involve obesity and altered sperm flagella, making it more than a classic eye-only test.

BBS4 is important for ciliary function. The c.58A>T variant introduces an early stop codon and causes loss of normal BBS4 protein function.

Inheritance and result

The trait is inherited as an autosomal recessive condition. Clear dogs have two normal copies. Carriers have one copy of the variant and can pass it on. Dogs with two copies have the genotype that causes this PRA form.
