Detects the ADAMTS17 variant c.194_213del that causes primary open-angle glaucoma / POAG in the Basset Hound.
Overview
This genetic test analyses the ADAMTS17 variant c.194_213del in the Basset Hound. The condition is known as primary open-angle glaucoma / POAG, hereditary glaucoma and inherited open-angle glaucoma. In POAG, the drainage angle of the eye remains open, but aqueous fluid does not drain effectively. Eye pressure can rise gradually and damage the retina and optic nerve.
Glaucoma is a serious eye disease that can cause pain, redness, corneal cloudiness, enlarged eyes and progressive loss of vision. Early changes may be subtle, so inherited glaucoma is often noticed only after clear eye damage has developed. DNA testing makes it possible to identify the genetic risk before visible signs appear.
This analysis is especially useful for breeders who want to include eye health in selection decisions. The result helps identify carriers, avoid high-risk matings and preserve valuable lines without excluding dogs unnecessarily. For owners, it provides clear genetic information that supports targeted eye follow-up and a better understanding of family or line-related risk.
The trait is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. A carrier is usually not affected, but can pass the variant on. When two carriers are bred together, some puppies can inherit two copies and develop the inherited glaucoma risk. Age of onset and severity can differ between dogs, but the DNA result gives a direct and lifelong indication of the tested inherited predisposition.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Clear (N/N)
No copies of the tested variant were detected. This dog is clear for this test and will not pass the variant on.
Genotype / allele combination: Carrier (N/del)
One copy of the tested variant was detected. This dog is a carrier and can pass the variant on; avoid breeding to another carrier for the same variant.
Genotype / allele combination: Affected (del/del)
Two copies of the tested variant were detected. This genotype causes the tested inherited glaucoma risk in this breed; use this result actively in breeding selection and eye follow-up.
