Genetic test for the TNR variant c.831dupC that causes Paroxysmal exercise-induced dyskinesia / PED in the Weimaraner.
Overview
This genetic test analyses the TNR variant c.831dupC in the Weimaraner. The condition is known as Paroxysmal exercise-induced dyskinesia / PED and related clinical names used for this disorder.
The tested TNR duplication causes a frameshift and strongly truncates tenascin-R, a protein important in the nervous system.
Affected Weimaraners can develop puppy-onset episodes with abnormal gait, hypermetria, dystonia, ataxia, kyphosis, low head carriage and sometimes collapse. Episodes are often triggered by exercise or excitement.
For breeders and owners, this type of DNA test is especially valuable because carriers can look healthy. Without DNA results, two carriers may be paired unintentionally and produce puppies with a serious disorder.
The trait is autosomal recessive. A clear dog does not carry the variant, a carrier has one copy and a dog with two copies is genetically affected for this tested form.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Clear (N/N)
This dog does not carry the tested TNR variant and will not pass this variant to offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Carrier (N/dupC)
This dog carries one copy of the tested TNR variant. It is a carrier and can pass the variant on; mating with another carrier can produce puppies with Paroxysmal exercise-induced dyskinesia / PED.
Genotype / allele combination: Genetically affected (dupC/dupC)
This dog carries two copies of the tested TNR variant. This genotype causes the tested autosomal recessive form of Paroxysmal exercise-induced dyskinesia / PED. This can present as movement episodes triggered by exercise or excitement.
