Genetic test for the SLC7A10 variant c.126C>A that causes Paradoxical pseudomyotonia / PPM in the English Cocker Spaniel / English Springer Spaniel.
Overview
This genetic test analyses the SLC7A10 variant c.126C>A in the English Cocker Spaniel / English Springer Spaniel. The condition is known as Paradoxical pseudomyotonia / PPM and related clinical names used for this disorder.
The tested SLC7A10 variant introduces a premature stop codon and disrupts a transporter important for muscle and nerve function.
Affected dogs usually develop brief episodes of generalised muscle stiffness at a young age after exercise, stairs, jumping or other triggers. Gait can become strikingly stiff or unusual, and severe episodes can involve collapse or breathing difficulty.
For breeders and owners, this type of DNA test is especially valuable because carriers can look healthy. Without DNA results, two carriers may be paired unintentionally and produce puppies with a serious disorder.
The trait is autosomal recessive. A clear dog does not carry the variant, a carrier has one copy and a dog with two copies is genetically affected for this tested form.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Clear (C/C)
This dog does not carry the tested SLC7A10 variant and will not pass this variant to offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Carrier (C/A)
This dog carries one copy of the tested SLC7A10 variant. It is a carrier and can pass the variant on; mating with another carrier can produce puppies with Paradoxical pseudomyotonia / PPM.
Genotype / allele combination: Genetically affected (A/A)
This dog carries two copies of the tested SLC7A10 variant. This genotype causes the tested autosomal recessive form of Paradoxical pseudomyotonia / PPM. The result explains the genetic risk for exercise-related muscle stiffness for this variant.
