DNA test for the CHST6/LOC489707 c.814C>A variant causing macular corneal dystrophy (MCD) in dogs.
Overview
This genetic test analyses the CHST6/LOC489707 c.814C>A-variant in dogs. The condition is known as macular corneal dystrophy, macular dystrophy of the cornea or MCD. It is especially relevant for breeds and lines in which this variant has been described, including Labrador Retriever and Australian Labradoodle.
MCD affects the cornea. The cornea can gradually become cloudy and develop multiple off-white to yellow-brown opacities. Vision can therefore decline, especially as the corneal haze progresses. Because visible signs often appear later in life, a breeding dog may have passed on the variant before clinical signs are obvious.
The trait is inherited as an autosomal recessive condition. A dog with one copy is a carrier and can pass the variant on without being affected. A dog with two copies has the genetic result that causes the tested form of MCD. The result therefore separates clear, carrier and affected genetic status.
This test has practical value for breeders, owners and veterinarians who want to manage inherited eye disease in a line more precisely. It helps identify hidden carriers, avoid risk matings and interpret eye screening with stronger genetic context.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Clear (C/C)
The dog has genotype C/C. The tested MCD variant was not detected and this dog will not pass on this variant.
Genotype / allele combination: Carrier (C/A)
The dog has genotype C/A. This animal is a carrier of the tested MCD variant and can pass it to offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Affected genetic result (A/A)
The dog has genotype A/A. This genotype causes the tested autosomal recessive form of macular corneal dystrophy.
