DNA test for the SGCD c.534_535delGA deletion that causes LGMDR6 / limb-girdle muscular dystrophy in Boston Terriers.
Overview
This genetic test analyses the SGCD c.534_535delGA deletion in the Boston Terrier. The condition is named limb-girdle muscular dystrophy, LGMD and LGMDR6.
SGCD encodes delta-sarcoglycan, part of the sarcoglycan complex that helps stabilise the muscle cell membrane.
Affected puppies can develop marked muscle weakness and muscle loss, especially around the shoulders and hips. This can lead to stiff movement, difficulty with normal activity and an obvious muscle problem at a young age.
The trait is inherited as autosomal recessive. One copy makes a dog a carrier; two copies cause the genetically affected genotype.
LGMD is an umbrella term for several muscular dystrophies; this test specifically concerns the SGCD variant used in Boston Terriers.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Clear / normal genotype (N/N)
The dog does not carry the tested SGCD c.534_535delGA variant. This animal will not pass this specific variant to offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Carrier (N/del)
The dog carries one copy of the tested SGCD c.534_535delGA variant. Carriers generally do not develop SGCD-related limb-girdle muscular dystrophy from this variant themselves, but can pass it on; two carriers can produce affected puppies.
Genotype / allele combination: Affected / genetically positive (del/del)
The dog has two copies of the tested SGCD c.534_535delGA variant. This genotype causes SGCD-related limb-girdle muscular dystrophy; severe muscle weakness and muscle loss can already be visible in puppyhood. The animal will pass the variant to all offspring.
