DNA test for inflammatory pulmonary disease, recurrent inflammatory pulmonary disease and IPD in Collies, analysing AKNA c.2717_2720delACAG.
Overview
This genetic test analyses the AKNA c.2717_2720delACAG deletion in Collies. The condition is known as inflammatory pulmonary disease, recurrent inflammatory pulmonary disease and IPD. AKNA encodes a transcription factor involved in regulation of inflammatory and immune processes.
Affected puppies can develop respiratory problems very early in life. The condition can involve recurrent bronchopneumonia, shallow or noisy breathing, coughing, nasal discharge, fever and general illness. The clinical picture may resemble primary ciliary dyskinesia, but this test focuses on the AKNA deletion shown in Collies with this pulmonary disease.
The condition is autosomal recessive. One copy makes a dog a carrier. Two copies of the deletion cause the tested risk genotype for this AKNA-related inflammatory pulmonary disease.
This test helps Collie breeders identify carriers reliably and plan matings that avoid affected puppies. In lines where respiratory problems or IPD are relevant, the result gives direct information for breeding selection, risk management and clear communication with puppy buyers. In young dogs with matching signs, the result can also help clarify the genetic component of the condition earlier.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Clear (N/N)
The tested AKNA deletion was not detected. The dog is not a carrier of this deletion and will not pass it on.
Genotype / allele combination: Carrier (N/del)
The dog carries one copy of the tested AKNA deletion. The dog is a carrier and can pass the deletion on; for breeding, pair with a clear-tested partner.
Genotype / allele combination: Affected genotype (del/del)
The dog has two copies of the tested AKNA deletion. This genotype causes the tested autosomal recessive inflammatory pulmonary disease in Collies.
