DNA test for inflammatory myopathy, myositis and CDMC in Dutch Shepherds, analysing SLC25A12 c.1046T>C.
Overview
This genetic test analyses the SLC25A12 c.1046T>C variant in the Dutch Shepherd. The condition is known as inflammatory myopathy, myositis and, also as cerebellar degeneration-myositis complex or CDMC. SLC25A12 encodes a mitochondrial aspartate/glutamate transporter that is important for muscle metabolism.
Affected dogs develop a severe progressive neuromuscular disease. Signs can start early in life and include muscle weakness, muscle loss, tremors, hind limb stiffness, abnormal gait and eventually difficulty or inability to walk. Because this is a recessive condition, identifying carriers is especially important for breeding combinations.
The condition is autosomal recessive. A dog with one copy is a carrier and can pass the variant on without being affected. Two copies of the tested variant cause the risk genotype for this SLC25A12-related myopathy.
This test gives breeders a clear basis for targeted selection in Dutch Shepherds. By identifying carriers early, matings can be planned to avoid affected puppies while preserving valuable lines. For owners and veterinarians, the result supports genetic interpretation of muscle weakness or movement problems in the correct breed context and helps build a transparent breeding and health strategy.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Clear (T/T)
The tested SLC25A12 variant was not detected. The dog is not a carrier of this variant and will not pass it on.
Genotype / allele combination: Carrier (T/C)
The dog carries one copy of the tested SLC25A12 variant. The dog is a carrier and can pass the variant on; for breeding, pair with a clear-tested partner.
Genotype / allele combination: Affected genotype (C/C)
The dog has two copies of the tested SLC25A12 variant. This genotype causes the tested autosomal recessive inflammatory myopathy in Dutch Shepherds.
