Overview

Factor XII deficiency in cats

This genetic test analyses two variants in F12 that cause Factor XII deficiency, also called FXII deficiency or Hageman trait, in cats. Factor XII is part of the intrinsic coagulation pathway and influences laboratory values such as aPTT and ACT.

Cats with Factor XII deficiency often have markedly prolonged clotting times in laboratory tests, while this trait generally does not increase bleeding tendency. That distinction is practical: a genetic result helps place abnormal coagulation test results in the right context and reduces unnecessary confusion during work-up or procedures.

Practical value of this test

  • Determines whether the cat carries one or two of the tested F12 variants.
  • Helps breeders and veterinarians explain prolonged aPTT/ACT values genetically.
  • Supports breeding selection because the trait is autosomal recessive.

The analysis includes the variants c.1631G>C and c.1321delC. Two copies of a relevant F12 variant cause a genetically Factor XII-deficient status; carriers can pass the variant to offspring.

Included subanalyses

This analysis includes the following subanalyses:

  • Factor XII-deficiëntie c.1321delC (F12) - Cat
  • Factor XII-deficiëntie c.1631G>C (F12) - Cat
