Overview

About Factor XI deficiency in Maine Coon cats

This DNA test assesses the F11 variant c.1546G>A in Maine Coon cats. The condition is known as Factor XI deficiency, FXI deficiency, FXID, haemophilia C, plasma thromboplastin antecedent deficiency or Rosenthal syndrome.

F11 encodes coagulation factor XI, a component of blood clotting. In genetically affected cats, factor XI level or activity can be reduced, making clot formation less efficient.

What may the owner notice?

  • Bleeding: prolonged or excessive bleeding after injury, surgery or dental extraction.
  • Skin and mucosal signs: easier bruising, haematomas or gum bleeding.
  • Variable severity: some cats show clear signs, while others become noticeable around surgery, trauma or wound healing.

Practical value of this test

Factor XI deficiency is inherited as autosomal recessive. The result helps distinguish clear Maine Coons, carriers and genetically affected cats. For breeders it supports safer mating plans; for owners and veterinarians it provides valuable information when planning procedures, dental care and follow-up.
