Overview

About epileptic encephalopathy in Bengal cats

This DNA test assesses the CAD variant c.6044G>A in Bengal cats. The condition is called epileptic encephalopathy or EE and is a severe inherited neurological disease.

CAD encodes a multifunctional enzyme involved in producing building blocks for DNA and RNA. When two copies of the tested variant are present, normal function in nervous tissue can be disrupted.

Recognisable features

  • Early onset: signs may become visible in young kittens.
  • Seizures: epileptic episodes, muscle jerks, stiff posture, chewing movements or drooling can occur.
  • Neurological decline: reduced alertness, behavioural changes and developmental regression can progress quickly.

Practical value of this test

EE is inherited as autosomal recessive. The result shows whether a Bengal cat is clear, a carrier or carries two copies of the tested variant. This supports carrier identification and helps avoid matings that can produce affected kittens.
