DNA test for SPTB-related elliptocytosis in dogs, analysing SPTB c.6119C>T.
Overview
This genetic test analyses the SPTB variant c.6119C>T for elliptocytosis, hereditary elliptocytosis and SPTB-related abnormal red blood cell shape in dogs.
In elliptocytosis, red blood cells more often have an oval or elliptical shape instead of the normal round biconcave shape. SPTB encodes beta-spectrin, an important component of the red blood cell skeleton. A change in this protein can influence red cell shape and mechanical stability.
The condition is often described as mild and may be detected incidentally during blood testing or examination of a blood smear. The information is still useful, because abnormally shaped red cells can be more sensitive to mechanical stress and because the result helps identify a hereditary explanation for elliptocytes.
The exact inheritance pattern for this SPTB variant is not fully defined. The test therefore reports variant status: C/C, C/T or T/T. A dog carrying the T variant can pass it on; interpretation should be combined with blood findings, family information and breeding goals.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Variant not detected (C/C)
The genotype C/C means the tested SPTB c.6119C>T variant was not detected. This dog does not pass on the tested T variant.
Genotype / allele combination: Variant-positive / heterozygous (C/T)
The genotype C/T means the dog carries one copy of the SPTB variant. This result can explain elliptocytosis and the dog can pass the variant to offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Two copies of the variant (T/T)
The genotype T/T means two copies of the tested SPTB variant were detected. This is a variant-positive result and should be assessed together with blood findings and family information.
