DNA test for classical Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (cEDS / type 1) in Labrador Retrievers, analysing the COL5A1 c.3038del variant.
Overview
This genetic test analyses the COL5A1 c.3038del variant in Labrador Retrievers. The condition is known as classical Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, cEDS, EDS type 1, cutaneous asthenia or an inherited connective-tissue disorder.
COL5A1 encodes a component of type V collagen. Collagen contributes to the strength and elasticity of skin, joints and other connective tissues. A relevant variant can therefore be seen as very stretchy or fragile skin, skin tearing, bruising, abnormal scarring and joint hypermobility.
The test helps breeders and owners determine whether a dog carries the tested COL5A1 variant. Because this trait is autosomal dominant, one copy of the variant is already meaningful for genetic status. The result supports breeding selection, helps prevent unnoticed transmission within a line and gives clear context in Labrador Retrievers with fragile skin or unusual joint flexibility.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: No COL5A1 variant detected (N/N)
The tested COL5A1 variant was not detected. This dog will not pass this specific EDS variant to offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Variant present (N/del)
The dog has one copy of the tested COL5A1 variant. In this dominant EDS form, one copy causes the genetic predisposition for the disorder and can be passed to offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Two variant copies (del/del)
The dog has two copies of the tested COL5A1 variant. This result should be treated as genetically affected for this EDS variant and is highly important for breeding selection.
