Overview

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome in Bengal cats

This genetic test analyses the COL5A1 variant c.112_118+15del, which can cause classical Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (cEDS) in Bengal cats. The condition is also known as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type 1, cutaneous asthenia or dermatosparaxis.

COL5A1 is important for type V collagen, a connective-tissue component that contributes to skin and joint strength and elasticity. Cats with cEDS may have very stretchy, fragile skin, frequent skin tears, slower wound healing and joint laxity.

Practical value of this test

  • Determines whether a Bengal cat carries the tested COL5A1 variant.
  • Supports breeding selection because one copy of a dominant variant can already be clinically relevant.
  • Provides clear genetic information in lines with fragile skin, abnormal scarring or joint laxity.

The trait follows an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. A cat with one copy of the tested variant is interpreted as genetically affected and can pass the variant to offspring.

Included subanalyses

This analysis includes the following subanalysis:

  • Ehlers-Danlos-syndroom c.112_118+15del (COL5A1) - Bengaal
