DNA test for the COL5A1 c.112_118+15del variant that causes classical Ehlers-Danlos/cutaneous asthenia in Bengal cats.
Overview
This genetic test analyses the COL5A1 variant c.112_118+15del, which can cause classical Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (cEDS) in Bengal cats. The condition is also known as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type 1, cutaneous asthenia or dermatosparaxis.
COL5A1 is important for type V collagen, a connective-tissue component that contributes to skin and joint strength and elasticity. Cats with cEDS may have very stretchy, fragile skin, frequent skin tears, slower wound healing and joint laxity.
The trait follows an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. A cat with one copy of the tested variant is interpreted as genetically affected and can pass the variant to offspring.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Clear for the tested variant
This cat does not carry the tested COL5A1 variant. This variant will not cause the tested trait in this cat and will not be passed on.
Genotype / allele combination: Carrier of the dominant variant
This cat carries one copy of the tested COL5A1 variant. One copy can cause the tested dominant trait and can be passed to offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Two copies of the dominant variant
This cat has two copies of the tested COL5A1 variant. For a dominant variant this is interpreted as genetically affected; visible expression and health impact can differ by variant.
