DNA panel for KRT71 alleles influencing Devon Rex curly coat and Sphynx hairless coat.
Overview
This genetic analysis examines KRT71 alleles involved in Devon Rex curly coat and the Sphynx hairless coat. The relevant alleles are often designated re for Devon Rex and hr or Re^HR for Sphynx hairless.
KRT71 influences hair shaft structure. Devon Rex cats have a short, wavy to curly and often somewhat sparse coat. Sphynx hairless causes an almost hairless appearance with short or curled whiskers and reduced insulating coat.
The KRT71 re and hr alleles behave autosomal recessive relative to wildtype. In combined interpretation, the combination of wildtype, hr and re is most important for expected coat.

This analysis includes the following subanalyses:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Clear for the tested variant
This cat carries no copy of the tested variant. It will not develop Devon Rex curly coat due to this variant and will not pass it on.
Genotype / allele combination: Carrier of the tested variant
This cat carries one copy of the tested variant. It is not expected to be affected, but can pass the variant to offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Genetically affected
This cat has two copies of the KRT71 re allele. This genotype causes the short, wavy to curly Devon Rex coat, unless combination with other KRT71 alleles such as hr determines coat differently.
Genotype / allele combination: Clear for the tested variant
This cat carries no copy of the tested variant. It will not develop Sphynx hairless due to this variant and will not pass it on.
Genotype / allele combination: Carrier of the tested variant
This cat carries one copy of the tested variant. It is not expected to be affected, but can pass the variant to offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Genetically affected
This cat has two copies of the tested KRT71 hr variant. This genotype causes the Sphynx hairless phenotype with almost absent coat and short or curled whiskers.
