DNA test for the VMP1 g.34218228C>A / p.P160Q variant causing cerebellar abiotrophy / CA in Kelpies.
Overview
This genetic test analyses the VMP1 variant g.34218228C>A / p.P160Q in the Kelpie. The disorder is called cerebellar abiotrophy, abbreviated CA, and is also described as cerebellar ataxia or Kelpie ataxia.
The cerebellum controls balance, coordination and fine motor control. In VMP1-related CA, nerve cells in this area are affected. Affected dogs may develop ataxia, wide-based stance, head or intention tremors, hypermetria, high or exaggerated stepping, reduced proprioception and tremors when excited. This VMP1 form is mainly linked to later onset, often from several months of age.
This variant is autosomal recessive. C/C means that the tested variant was not detected. C/A means carrier: the dog is not affected but can pass the variant on. A/A causes the genetic form of VMP1-related cerebellar abiotrophy and is reported as an affected genotype.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: C/C - no VMP1-CA variant detected
The dog does not carry the tested VMP1 g.34218228C>A variant and will not pass this variant to offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: C/A - VMP1-CA carrier
The dog carries one copy of the VMP1 variant. The dog is not genetically affected for this recessive test, but can pass the variant to about half of its offspring. Avoid matings with another carrier.
Genotype / allele combination: A/A - affected genotype for VMP1-CA
The dog has two copies of the VMP1 g.34218228C>A variant. This genotype causes VMP1-related cerebellar abiotrophy and explains a high risk of CA with coordination problems, tremors and abnormal gait.
