DNA test for Bulldog dwarfism / chondrodysplasia in Dexter and Scottish Highland cattle; assesses ACAN BD1 and BD2.

Overview
This DNA test assesses two ACAN variants known as BD1 and BD2. The trait is also called Bulldog Calf Syndrome, congenital bovine chondrodysplasia, chondrodysplasia and bulldog calf. The analysis is relevant for Dexter and Scottish Highland cattle; both variants are assessed for both breeds.
ACAN encodes aggrecan, a protein with an important role in cartilage development and function. Carriers may show shorter legs or a chondrodysplastic type. Animals with two disease-associated ACAN alleles have the severe bulldog-calf presentation, often with late fetal loss or a stillborn, severely malformed calf.
The result shows whether the animal is clear, carries one of the tested variants, or has a risk combination for the tested ACAN variants. This helps breeders identify carriers correctly, avoid carrier-to-carrier matings and make targeted breeding decisions without unnecessarily excluding valuable lines.
For these ACAN variants the trait is described as autosomal incompletely dominant: one copy can give a milder chondrodysplastic effect, while two disease-associated copies lead to the severe bulldog-calf presentation.

Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Clear for BD1 (N/N)
No copy of the tested BD1 variant was detected. This animal will not pass on this specific variant.
Genotype / allele combination: Carrier of BD1
One copy of the tested BD1 variant was detected. This animal can pass the variant on; pairing with animals clear for the tested ACAN variants is preferred.
Genotype / allele combination: Two copies of BD1
Two copies of the tested BD1 variant were detected. This is consistent with the severe bulldog-calf presentation and is unusual in living animals; review this result carefully.
Genotype / allele combination: Clear for BD2 (N/N)
No copy of the tested BD2 variant was detected. This animal will not pass on this specific variant.
Genotype / allele combination: Carrier of BD2
One copy of the tested BD2 variant was detected. This animal can pass the variant on; pairing with animals clear for the tested ACAN variants is preferred.
Genotype / allele combination: Two copies of BD2
Two copies of the tested BD2 variant were detected. This is consistent with the severe bulldog-calf presentation and is unusual in living animals; review this result carefully.
