DNA test for Suri fleece variation in alpacas, with analysis of TRPV3.
Overview
This genetic test examines the TRPV3 variant c.1423G>T associated with the Suri fleece type in alpacas. Alpacas are usually described by two main fleece types: Huacaya and Suri. Huacaya fleece is typically compact, soft and clearly crimped. Suri fleece is longer, straighter, more lustrous and more often falls in separate locks.
The tested variant is a stop-gain change that probably shortens the TRPV3 protein. The genetic data support a dominant contribution to the Suri phenotype, but visible fleece type, fibre quality and breeding value still depend on the wider genetic and breeding context.
The result helps breeders include Suri-associated genetic information in mating choices, breeding-animal selection and interpretation of offspring. This is especially useful when young animals are still difficult to assess, when the fleece type appears mixed or when appearance and pedigree do not fully clarify which genetic factor is present.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: No tested TRPV3 Suri variant detected
The alpaca does not carry the tested TRPV3 c.1423G>T variant. This result is consistent with absence of this Suri-associated variant.
Genotype / allele combination: One copy of the TRPV3 Suri variant
The alpaca carries one copy of the TRPV3 c.1423G>T variant. This supports presence of a Suri-associated genetic factor; final fleece type and fibre quality still depend on the wider genetic and breeding context.
Genotype / allele combination: Two copies of the TRPV3 Suri variant
The alpaca carries two copies of the TRPV3 c.1423G>T variant. This confirms presence of the tested Suri-associated variant; interpretation of visible fleece type remains linked to the wider genetic and breeding context.
