DNA test for the MC5R c.709G>A variant at the SD locus, a genetic marker that helps influence the amount of shedding in dogs.
Overview
This genetic test detects the MC5R c.709G>A variant at the SD locus. This variant is associated with reduced shedding and shorter coat length in dogs. The test is also described as a shedding test, SD-locus test or MC5R shedding test.
MC5R plays a role in the skin and sebaceous glands. Dogs carrying the SD variant tend to shed less than dogs without it. Final coat type is also influenced by other loci, such as hair length and furnishings, so the visible amount of loose hair can differ between dogs.
Shedding is a multifactorial trait. G/G gives the highest MC5R contribution to shedding, G/A indicates one copy of the SD variant and A/A indicates two copies of the variant that lowers the MC5R contribution to shedding.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Higher shedding expected (G/G)
This genotype contains no copy of the MC5R SD variant. From this marker, the dog has the highest genetic contribution to shedding; other coat genes can also shape the final coat result.
Genotype / allele combination: Lower shedding possible (G/A)
This genotype contains one copy of the MC5R SD variant. The dog has a genetic contribution to lower shedding, especially when it combines favourably with other coat loci.
Genotype / allele combination: Lowest MC5R contribution to shedding (A/A)
This genotype contains two copies of the MC5R SD variant. It clearly lowers the MC5R contribution to shedding; final coat maintenance also depends on hair length, furnishings and other coat genes.
