Overview

Sabino 1 and white markings

This DNA test examines Sabino 1, also known as SB1, a KIT-related white spotting pattern in horses. Sabino can appear as high white legs, broad facial markings, white patches on belly or body and roan-like edges around white areas.

The SB1 allele is incompletely dominant: one copy often gives visible sabino markings, while two copies can produce a very extensive white pattern. Other white-pattern genes also influence the final appearance.

Inheritance and result

  • N/N means the SB1 allele was not detected.
  • N/SB1 means the horse carries one SB1 allele.
  • SB1/SB1 means the horse carries two SB1 alleles.

Practical value of this test

The result helps breeders plan white markings and sabino patterning, identify hidden SB1 carriers and understand combinations with other white-pattern genes. This is useful for colour selection, registration and predicting foal colours in lines where sabino is desired or relevant.
