Overview

What does this test examine?

This genetic test analyses the ADAMTS17 c.1473+1G>A variant in dogs. The disorder is known as primary lens luxation, PLL and inherited lens displacement.

ADAMTS17 contributes to the structure and stability of the fibres holding the lens in place. Dogs with two copies of the tested variant are more likely to have the lens move out of its normal position, which can quickly become painful and sight-threatening.

What does this disorder mean?

In primary lens luxation, the lens shifts within the eye. This can cause redness, pain, tearing, squinting, increased eye pressure, glaucoma and loss of vision. Because the disorder is inherited, the result is highly relevant before breeding decisions and for dogs from PLL-risk lines.

Practical value of this test

The test distinguishes clear dogs, carriers and genetically affected dogs. It helps breeders plan matings, use carriers responsibly and avoid producing puppies with two copies of the variant.

  • Clear: the dog does not carry the tested ADAMTS17 variant.
  • Carrier: the dog carries one copy, can pass it on and in some breeds this can add lens-risk information.
  • Genetically affected: the dog carries two copies and has a strongly increased genetic risk of primary lens luxation due to this variant.

For owners, the result adds clarity if eye signs develop or if a dog comes from a PLL-risk line. For breeders, it is a practical basis for selection and transparent communication.
