DNA test for Improper Coat, Furnishings and IC in dogs, analysing the RSPO2 167 bp 3′UTR insertion.
Overview
This genetic test analyses the RSPO2 167 bp 3′UTR insertion in dogs. The trait is known as Improper Coat, Furnishings, IC or the furnishings pattern with moustache, beard and eyebrows. RSPO2 influences coat texture and the pattern of longer hair around the muzzle, eyebrows and legs.
Dogs carrying the Furnishings allele usually develop visible facial furnishings, such as a moustache, beard and eyebrows, often with a rougher or wire-like coat appearance. Dogs without this allele do not carry the RSPO2-driven furnishings effect. In breeds or crosses where furnishings are expected, this may appear as a shorter, smoother or non-standard coat often called Improper Coat.
The Furnishings allele acts as an autosomal dominant trait: one copy is usually enough to produce furnishings. Absence of the Furnishings allele on both chromosomes gives an N/N result and means the dog does not carry this specific furnishings effect.
This test is particularly useful for breeders who want clearer expectations for coat appearance, crossings and litter planning. The result helps predict whether puppies can develop furnishings or may have an unfurnished or Improper Coat appearance in lines where that is undesirable. It supports targeted breeding selection, clearer communication with puppy buyers and better interpretation of coat variation in doodles, water dogs, terriers and other breeds or crosses where this trait matters.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: No Furnishings allele (N/N)
The dog carries no copy of the tested RSPO2 Furnishings allele. This gives no RSPO2-driven moustache, beard or eyebrows and can explain Improper Coat in relevant lines.
Genotype / allele combination: One Furnishings allele (N/F)
The dog carries one copy of the RSPO2 Furnishings allele. One copy is generally sufficient for furnishings; the dog can pass on either N or F.
Genotype / allele combination: Two Furnishings alleles (F/F)
The dog carries two copies of the RSPO2 Furnishings allele. This causes the furnishings effect and the dog passes F to all offspring.
