Overview

Hair length in cats

This DNA panel test analyses five known variants in FGF5 that contribute to long hair in cats. The trait is also described as coat length, longhair or FGF5-related hair length. FGF5 helps regulate the hair growth cycle; reduced function can allow the coat to grow longer.

Long hair usually follows an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. A cat with two longhair alleles in FGF5 can develop a long-haired coat. These may be two copies of the same variant, but also two different FGF5 longhair variants together. That is why a multi-variant panel is more useful than a single isolated variant.

Practical value of this test

  • Tests the FGF5 variants M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5 in one analysis.
  • Helps breeders distinguish shorthair, carrier status and genetic longhair potential more accurately.
  • Supports targeted breeding plans in breeds and lines where longhair can be hidden in carriers.

Important interpretation nuance

Each variant result should be read together with the other FGF5 results in this panel. A cat can be genetically long-haired through two copies of the same variant or through a combination of two different longhair variants.

Included subanalyses

This analysis includes the following subanalyses:

  • Hair length M1 c.356insT (FGF5) - Cat
