DNA panel for five FGF5 variants that cause or contribute to long hair in cats.
Overview
This DNA panel test analyses five known variants in FGF5 that contribute to long hair in cats. The trait is also described as coat length, longhair or FGF5-related hair length. FGF5 helps regulate the hair growth cycle; reduced function can allow the coat to grow longer.
Long hair usually follows an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. A cat with two longhair alleles in FGF5 can develop a long-haired coat. These may be two copies of the same variant, but also two different FGF5 longhair variants together. That is why a multi-variant panel is more useful than a single isolated variant.
Each variant result should be read together with the other FGF5 results in this panel. A cat can be genetically long-haired through two copies of the same variant or through a combination of two different longhair variants.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalyses:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Variant not detected
This cat does not carry the FGF5 M1 variant c.356insT. This does not exclude other FGF5 longhair variants; read this result together with the other subanalyses.
Genotype / allele combination: Longhair allele carrier
This cat carries one copy of the FGF5 M1 variant c.356insT. One copy can be passed on hidden; together with a second FGF5 longhair allele, the cat can be genetically long-haired or produce long-haired offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Two copies of longhair allele
This cat has two copies of the FGF5 M1 variant c.356insT. This genotype causes genetic longhair potential through this FGF5 variant.
Genotype / allele combination: Variant not detected
This cat does not carry the FGF5 M2 variant c.406C>T. This does not exclude other FGF5 longhair variants; read this result together with the other subanalyses.
Genotype / allele combination: Longhair allele carrier
This cat carries one copy of the FGF5 M2 variant c.406C>T. One copy can be passed on hidden; together with a second FGF5 longhair allele, the cat can be genetically long-haired or produce long-haired offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Two copies of longhair allele
This cat has two copies of the FGF5 M2 variant c.406C>T. This genotype causes genetic longhair potential through this FGF5 variant.
Genotype / allele combination: Variant not detected
This cat does not carry the FGF5 M3 variant c.474del. This does not exclude other FGF5 longhair variants; read this result together with the other subanalyses.
Genotype / allele combination: Longhair allele carrier
This cat carries one copy of the FGF5 M3 variant c.474del. One copy can be passed on hidden; together with a second FGF5 longhair allele, the cat can be genetically long-haired or produce long-haired offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Two copies of longhair allele
This cat has two copies of the FGF5 M3 variant c.474del. This genotype causes genetic longhair potential through this FGF5 variant.
Genotype / allele combination: Variant not detected
This cat does not carry the FGF5 M4 variant c.475A>C. This does not exclude other FGF5 longhair variants; read this result together with the other subanalyses.
Genotype / allele combination: Longhair allele carrier
This cat carries one copy of the FGF5 M4 variant c.475A>C. One copy can be passed on hidden; together with a second FGF5 longhair allele, the cat can be genetically long-haired or produce long-haired offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Two copies of longhair allele
This cat has two copies of the FGF5 M4 variant c.475A>C. This genotype causes genetic longhair potential through this FGF5 variant.
Genotype / allele combination: Variant not detected
This cat does not carry the FGF5 M5 variant c.577G>A. This does not exclude other FGF5 longhair variants; read this result together with the other subanalyses.
Genotype / allele combination: Longhair allele carrier
This cat carries one copy of the FGF5 M5 variant c.577G>A. One copy can be passed on hidden; together with a second FGF5 longhair allele, the cat can be genetically long-haired or produce long-haired offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Two copies of longhair allele
This cat has two copies of the FGF5 M5 variant c.577G>A. This genotype causes genetic longhair potential through this FGF5 variant.
