DNA panel for five FGF5 variants contributing to long hair / long coat in dogs and helping identify dogs carrying long-hair alleles.
Overview
This genetic analysis examines five variants in the FGF5 gene used for hair length, long coat and, in some breeds, fluffy coat in dogs. The subanalyses cover FGF5 c.284G>T, c.578C>T, c.559_560dupGG, c.556_571del and c.368-11T>A.
FGF5 helps regulate the growth phase of the hair follicle. Variants that reduce normal FGF5 function can allow hair to keep growing for longer. In many dogs, long hair behaves recessively: a dog with one long-hair allele is usually a carrier, while two long-hair alleles, either identical or combined across different FGF5 variants, can produce a longer coat. Other coat genes still shape texture, colour, curl, furnishings and the final look.
Because five variants are tested, the result should be read across all subanalyses together. Two relevant FGF5 variant copies can produce a long-coat outcome, even when the copies are found in two different subanalyses.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalyses:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: No variant copy detected (G/G)
The FGF5 c.284G>T variant was not detected. For this subanalysis, the dog does not carry this specific long-hair allele.
Genotype / allele combination: One variant copy detected (G/T)
The dog carries one copy of FGF5 c.284G>T. This is important carrier information: combined with a second FGF5 long-hair allele, long coat can occur in offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Two variant copies detected (T/T)
The dog has two copies of FGF5 c.284G>T. This genotype contributes long-hair expression for this variant and is highly relevant for predicting long coat or fluffy coat.
Genotype / allele combination: No variant copy detected (C/C)
The FGF5 c.578C>T variant was not detected. For this subanalysis, the dog does not carry this specific long-hair allele.
Genotype / allele combination: One variant copy detected (C/T)
The dog carries one copy of FGF5 c.578C>T. This is important carrier information: combined with a second FGF5 long-hair allele, long coat can occur in offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Two variant copies detected (T/T)
The dog has two copies of FGF5 c.578C>T. This genotype contributes long-hair expression for this variant and is highly relevant for predicting long coat or fluffy coat.
Genotype / allele combination: No variant copy detected (N/N)
The FGF5 c.559_560dupGG variant was not detected. For this subanalysis, the dog does not carry this specific long-hair allele.
Genotype / allele combination: One variant copy detected (N/dupGG)
The dog carries one copy of FGF5 c.559_560dupGG. This is important carrier information: combined with a second FGF5 long-hair allele, long coat can occur in offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Two variant copies detected (dupGG/dupGG)
The dog has two copies of FGF5 c.559_560dupGG. This genotype contributes long-hair expression for this variant and is highly relevant for predicting long coat or fluffy coat.
Genotype / allele combination: No variant copy detected (N/N)
The FGF5 c.556_571del variant was not detected. For this subanalysis, the dog does not carry this specific long-hair allele.
Genotype / allele combination: One variant copy detected (N/del16)
The dog carries one copy of FGF5 c.556_571del. This is important carrier information: combined with a second FGF5 long-hair allele, long coat can occur in offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Two variant copies detected (del16/del16)
The dog has two copies of FGF5 c.556_571del. This genotype contributes long-hair expression for this variant and is highly relevant for predicting long coat or fluffy coat.
Genotype / allele combination: No variant copy detected (T/T)
The FGF5 c.368-11T>A variant was not detected. For this subanalysis, the dog does not carry this specific long-hair allele.
Genotype / allele combination: One variant copy detected (T/A)
The dog carries one copy of FGF5 c.368-11T>A. This is important carrier information: combined with a second FGF5 long-hair allele, long coat can occur in offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Two variant copies detected (A/A)
The dog has two copies of FGF5 c.368-11T>A. This genotype contributes long-hair expression for this variant and is highly relevant for predicting long coat or fluffy coat.
