Overview

Gravel is a subtle ball python (Python regius) morph within the Yellow Belly complex. Because Gravel can closely resemble other alleles in the same complex, such as Yellow Belly and Asphalt, DNA analysis is often the most reliable way to confirm an animal’s genetic status.

This DNA test detects the EDNRB2 variant c.499G>A associated with Gravel. Gravel is inherited in an incomplete dominant manner. This means animals carrying one copy of the variant typically show a subtler effect than animals carrying two copies. The test distinguishes wild type, heterozygous, and homozygous animals.

The result helps support pedigree verification and genetic interpretation, especially when appearance alone is not conclusive. This makes the test particularly valuable for targeted breeding decisions and for interpreting combinations within the Yellow Belly complex. In combination with Yellow Belly, Gravel is commonly known in the hobby as Highway.

  • Detection of the Gravel-associated EDNRB2 c.499G>A variant
  • Distinguishes wild type, heterozygous, and homozygous animals
  • Useful for genetic confirmation when visual identification is uncertain
  • Supports breeding plans and interpretation of Highway combinations
