Overview

Gold / Copper / Sunshine / Extreme Sunshine in cats

This DNA panel assesses three CORIN variants that cause gold-like coat modifications in cats: c.2383C>T for Sunshine, c.839G>A for Extreme Sunshine and c.2425C>T for Copper. The trait is also known as gold, copper, sunshine, extreme sunshine, wideband and golden tabby modification. CORIN variants influence the wideband pattern, enlarging the yellow band in agouti hairs and making the coat appear warmer gold, copper or blond.

The panel structure is useful because different CORIN alleles can produce similar golden tones but are not the same allele. The result helps breeders understand which specific gold, copper or sunshine variant is present and which combinations can be expected.

How to read the result

  • Clear per variant: the tested CORIN variant is not detected.
  • Carrier per variant: the cat carries one copy and can pass that variant on.
  • Two copies: the relevant CORIN variant can cause the corresponding gold, sunshine, extreme-sunshine or copper phenotype.

Practical value of this test

  • combines three relevant CORIN variants in one panel;
  • distinguishes Copper, Sunshine and Extreme Sunshine;
  • helps use or avoid golden tabby variants deliberately in breeding plans.
