Genetic test for the Ghost / Hypo / Orange Ghost MLPH variant in ball pythons.

Overview
This genetic test analyzes the MLPH variant c.4919_4923del associated with Ghost / Hypo / Orange Ghost in the ball python. Animals with this variant may show a lighter, more diluted brown-to-black coloration. Their shed skin also often contains very little pigment.
This trait shows recessive inheritance. In practice, this means an animal usually displays the associated phenotype only when it inherits the tested variant from both parents. Animals with one copy are typically carriers and can pass the variant on to offspring without fully showing the characteristic appearance.
The result helps determine whether the tested animal is clear, carrier, or positive for this specific variant. This can be highly useful for breeding decisions, phenotype interpretation, and better understanding the animal’s genetic background. Other colour genes and genetic factors may still influence the final appearance.
This test is specific to the tested MLPH variant and does not completely exclude other possible genetic causes of a similar phenotype.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Phenotypes
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: wt/wt
This animal does not carry the tested Ghost / Hypo / Orange Ghost-associated MLPH variant. It will not pass on the tested variant. Other colour genes can still influence the final appearance.
Genotype / allele combination: wt/del
This animal carries one copy of the tested Ghost / Hypo / Orange Ghost-associated MLPH variant. It can pass the variant to offspring. One copy does not usually explain the full phenotype on its own, and other colour genes can still shape the final appearance.
Genotype / allele combination: del/del
This animal has the tested Ghost / Hypo / Orange Ghost-associated MLPH genotype. It will pass the tested variant to offspring. Visible colour intensity can still vary and may be influenced by other colour genes.
