Overview

What does this test examine?

This genetic test analyses the DNM1 variant c.767G>T for Exercise-induced collapse in dogs. The condition is also known as EIC and collapse after intense exercise. The test determines whether the dog is clear, a carrier or genetically affected for this autosomal recessive variant.

What does this condition mean?

Dogs with the affected genotype can develop a wobbly gait, hindlimb weakness, incoordination and sometimes collapse during or shortly after strenuous exercise. Outside an episode the dog may appear normal, which makes DNA testing especially useful in breeds and lines where EIC occurs.

Inheritance and result

The condition is inherited as autosomal recessive. A dog with G/G does not carry the variant. A dog with G/T is a carrier and can pass the variant on. A dog with T/T has two copies and develops the tested inherited form of EIC.

Practical value of this test

  • helps breeders identify carriers before they are used in breeding combinations
  • supports mating plans that avoid producing affected puppies
  • gives owners clear information about exercise-related risk in sensitive dogs
  • supports selection in active working, sporting and hunting dog lines where performance and safety matter

Included subanalyses

This analysis includes the following subanalysis:

  • DNM1 c.767G>T - Exercise-induced collapse / EIC
