DNA test for the ECA13 16 kb deletion marker for distichiasis, also called distichia or an extra row of eyelashes, in Friesian horses.
Overview
This genetic test examines the 16 kb deletion marker on ECA13 used for distichiasis in the Friesian horse. Distichiasis is also described as distichia, an extra row of eyelashes or abnormally positioned eyelashes along the eyelid margin.
In distichiasis, eyelash-like hairs grow from an abnormal position at the eyelid margin. These hairs can irritate the cornea and conjunctiva. Horses may show tearing, squinting, chronic irritation, keratitis or corneal ulcers. Some horses show few obvious signs, while others develop clinically important eye problems.
The marker is used within an autosomal recessive model with incomplete penetrance. Two copies of the distichiasis marker increase the chance of clinical distichiasis, but severity and visibility can differ between horses. A carrier with one copy usually does not show obvious signs, but can pass the marker to offspring.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Clear genotype (N/N)
The tested ECA13 distichiasis marker was not detected. This horse does not pass this marker to offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Carrier (N/Dis)
This horse carries one copy of the ECA13 distichiasis marker. The animal can pass the marker to about half of its offspring; matings with another carrier can produce foals with two copies.
Genotype / allele combination: Two copies of the marker (Dis/Dis)
This horse has two copies of the ECA13 distichiasis marker. This increases the chance of distichiasis; targeted eye examination is important because misplaced eyelashes can cause corneal irritation and eye damage.
