DNA test for the TPO variant c.331C>T causing congenital hypothyroidism with goiter in Rat Terrier and Toy Fox Terrier.
Overview
This genetic test analyses the TPO variant c.331C>T in Rat Terrier and Toy Fox Terrier. The condition is known as congenital hypothyroidism with goiter, CHG and goitrous congenital hypothyroidism.
TPO encodes thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme needed to bind iodide to thyroglobulin and produce thyroid hormone. Puppies with two copies of the tested variant can fail to produce enough thyroid hormone early in life. Possible consequences include poor growth, lethargy, poor nursing, delayed opening of the eyes and ear canals, abnormal coat or skin development, an enlarged thyroid gland in the neck and sometimes skeletal changes. When goiter is present, neck swelling can also affect swallowing or breathing.
The trait is autosomal recessive. C/C means the tested variant was not detected. C/T means carrier: one copy does not cause this variant-linked form, but the dog can pass the variant on. T/T causes congenital hypothyroidism with goiter and is reported as a genetically affected result.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: Clear / normal genotype (C/C)
The genotype C/C means that the tested TPO variant was not detected. This dog does not develop this variant-linked form of congenital hypothyroidism with goiter and does not pass the tested variant to offspring.
Genotype / allele combination: Carrier (C/T)
The genotype C/T means the dog carries one copy of the tested TPO variant. One copy does not cause this autosomal recessive form, but the dog can pass the variant on. In breeding, combine this dog only with a clear partner.
Genotype / allele combination: Affected genotype (T/T)
The genotype T/T causes the tested variant-linked form of congenital hypothyroidism with goiter. The dog has two copies of the variant and is genetically affected. This result is important for rapid medical follow-up, avoiding risk matings and clear communication to owner or breeder.
