DNA test for Tobiano / Platenbont in horses; assesses KIT TO inversion and supports targeted coat-colour and breeding planning.
Overview
This DNA test examines the KIT-related chromosome 3 inversion that produces the Tobiano allele, also called TO, in horses. Tobiano is a well-known white-spotting pattern and is also described in Dutch as platenbont.
Tobiano horses usually have sharply bordered white patches on the body that often cross the topline. White legs are common and the skin below white areas is pink. The head is often relatively darker than in some other pinto patterns, although ordinary face markings and other colour genes can modify the overall appearance.
The TO allele acts as an autosomal dominant trait. One copy causes the Tobiano pattern and can be passed to about half of the offspring. Two copies also cause Tobiano and mean that the horse passes a TO allele to all offspring.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: N/N - tested variant not detected
The tested TO variant was not detected. This horse does not pass on this specific variant, although other white-spotting or coat-colour variants can still influence appearance.
Genotype / allele combination: N/TO - one TO copy
One TO copy causes het Tobiano-patroon. The horse can pass this variant to about half of its offspring; the visible pattern can become stronger or subtler through other coat-colour genes.
Genotype / allele combination: TO/TO - two TO copies
Two TO copies cause Tobiano and mean that this horse passes the TO allele to all offspring. This is especially useful for targeted Tobiano breeding planning.
