DNA test for Splashed White 3 / SW3 in horses; assesses MITF c.519_523delGTGTC and supports targeted coat-colour and breeding planning.
Overview
This DNA test examines the MITF variant c.519_523delGTGTC, known as Splashed White 3 / SW3, in horses. Splashed White is also described as white spotting, splash or SW and belongs to the coat-colour patterns in which pigment is absent in specific areas.
Splashed White can produce a broad blaze, extended white leg markings, white areas on the belly, pink skin under white hair and blue or partly blue eyes. The amount of white can vary widely: some horses show a clear splash pattern, while others look more subtle or also carry other white-pattern alleles. SW3 is rare, and the homozygous state is considered likely embryonic lethal, making this result especially important for mating decisions.
SW3 is inherited as an autosomal incomplete dominant trait. One copy can cause the pattern; two copies can produce a stronger effect or have a different biological meaning for certain SW variants. Other loci for base colour, dilution and white spotting still influence the final appearance.
Included subanalyses
This analysis includes the following subanalysis:
Allele combinations & result interpretations
Below, for each tested locus, you will find the possible allele combinations that may be reported within this analysis, together with a brief explanation of their genetic meaning. The interpretation of possible interactions between different loci is included in the report, but is not shown here in full because that would lead to too many combinations on this page. The final expression may also depend on other genes and their interaction.
Genotype / allele combination: N/N - tested variant not detected
The tested SW3 variant was not detected. This horse does not pass on this specific variant, although other white-spotting or coat-colour variants can still influence appearance.
Genotype / allele combination: N/SW3 - one SW3 copy
One SW3 copy causes een zeldzaam MITF-gerelateerd Splashed White-patroon. The horse can pass this variant to about half of its offspring; the visible pattern can become stronger or subtler through other coat-colour genes.
Genotype / allele combination: SW3/SW3 - two SW3 copies
Two SW3 copies are considered likely embryonic lethal. A living horse with this result is highly unusual; sample identity and result confirmation are important before breeding decisions are made.
